Moving On

I have not updated The Filipino Engineer for sometime now because I am moving to a new place. I was tied up with my relocation. Once I get there and settled, I will be regularly updating this website again. Just bare with me for a while.

I will be leading the electrical team of my new company do the detail design for the 1,200km water pipeline booster stations which is a part of the proposed $7.5B infrastructure project. The supply voltage, MCCs and motors will all be medium voltage. I will keep this site posted on any development or experiences that I will be encountering during the project execution.

Some upcoming articles will be:

  • Cable short circuit withstand
  • Cable selection economy
  • And many more. . .

Impact of Globalization on Filipinos

Globalization is defined as the process of increasing integration between units around the world, including nation-states, households/individuals corporations and other organizations. A very general term to cover all aspects of society.

The effects of globalization could either be beneficial or detrimental to society. The positive effect of globalization increases the standard of living of Third World countries and the wealth to First World countries as well. The negative effect will be increased human rights violation in developing societies and cultural assimilation through the destruction of authentic local cultures.

What type of Boss are you?

After more than two decades working for others (employed), I have personally encountered almost any type of bosses you can ever think of. If you are reading this and you are handling people, you might be able to categorize yourself with at least one or several of the bosses I am going to discuss and illustrate.

Extremes of Both Worlds

I have worked on projects for companies which in my opinion are extremes in both worlds.

In the first world, companies have their policies, procedures, guidelines, management systems, safety systems, quality standards, engineering procedures and many more. A new employee may take months or even years to familiarize with the system.

Quality systems organizations require certified companies to adhere to these documents that in any situation wherein there may be some variations required in order to complete a project, new procedures or new documents need to be written. This is a natural phenomenon called evolution of documents.

To be or not to be

A famous Shakespearean phrase in the literary world.

What does this phrase have something to do in the technical world?

A lot, particularly after putting much effort into Front End Engineering and Design (FEED). Variations in detailed design is normal only if particular details are not achievable due to change in process, equipment design, environmental conditions, or any standards.

However, variations in specifications caused by the failure of Vendors or Suppliers to comply with the requirements is not normal.
